The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated a growing mental health crisis among young people, and many are turning to vaping as a way to cope with mental health challenges making it much more difficult to quit. To help young people quit vaping and feel less alone in the quitting process, we developed an Instagram-based, moderator-led cessation education program called Quit the Hit in partnership with Hopelab and UCSF that can supplement existing cessation support for teens and young adults.
We’re excited to share some of our initial findings about this program from our launch in South Carolina.
We also launched a Quit the Hit pilot program in San Diego Unified School District in 2021 and in Minnesota for young adults. Across all three programs, youth and young adults significantly increased their expectation to successfully quit vaping, or their quit confidence.
In the quit groups across these states, young people shared that the friendships they developed made them feel less alone in their journey, which helped them commit to quit. One participant in South Carolina commented, “Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. It was very encouraging, and that’s why I’m almost a month clean off vaping.” To see what the Quit the Hit experience is like for participants, watch this short video.
