Steps to Save a Life: Accidental Fentanyl Overdose Prevention Messages

In Illinois, there has been a dramatic increase in accidental fatal overdoses from fentanyl-laced pills and powders. The Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery and Prevention First have been working with Rescue Agency to develop and implement A Dose of Truth, a health communications campaign to prevent opioid-related overdoses by delivering relevant information to adults who are using illicit substances at-risk for containing fentanyl.

Our research with this audience has shown that they often have a foundational understanding of fentanyl-laced drugs and are highly motivated to adopt harm reduction strategies to save their friends. However, they often aren’t aware of the specific steps they can take to prevent an overdose. Our newest commercial, “Steps to Save a Life,” explains how they can help protect their friends from a fatal fentanyl overdose.

The commercial then directs the audience to the A Dose of Truth website to learn more life-saving tips and find Naloxone in their area.

If you’d like to learn more about implementing a life-saving overdose prevention campaign in your community, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Rescue Agency. We provide custom campaigns, as well as a fentanyl overdose prevention media campaign that can be implemented immediately called The Fentanyl Effect.
